US Highway 66
Design
In 1934, the National U.S. 66 Highway Association created this design. As one newspaper put it, "This is a reproduction of the US Highway No. 66 Association’s emblem, which it hopes to make popular. The emblem, on metal, is to be widely distributed among motorists living in states through which the highway passes. Through its publicity program, the Association hopes to increase greatly the amount of traffic passing over the highway."
With the tragic death of Will Rogers in August of 1935, the Association, like so many other groups, wished to pay homage to this much-beloved American – especially since Will was from Oklahoma as were many key Association members. (If you don't know who Will Rogers was, visit the web site www.willrogers.com.) In late 1935, the Association designated 66 as the Will Rogers Highway and came up with a new logo. (A very close approximation of the Association’s Will Rogers Highway design can be seen on the granite markers erected in OK and MO over the past several years.) As a result, use of the earlier logo ceased and its memory faded into the mists of time.
Except for the occasional metal disc that comes up for auction, the logo is virtually unknown to today’s 66ers – until now. Anderson Productions is pleased to bring back a truly wonderful, authentic piece of early-day Route 66 history - at prices everyone can afford. Enjoy.
